Kozhikode: Rail passengers were in for a harrowing time on Saturday with several trains running behind schedule in the wake of an intensified southwest monsoon.
Rail traffic was affected along the Shoranur-Mangaluru line after a tree got uprooted and fell across the tracks between Kadalundi and Feroke stations. The falling tree snapped overhead power lines at 6:30 am and the railway traction control switched off supply.
Several trains, including the Jan Shatabdi Express, are running late. The Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalapuram Express is being stationed at Vallikunu since morning.
Though the tree was cleared, trains were being operated on a single line. It would take time for the traffic to resume on a normal scale, the authorities said.
Heavy rain lashing the state since the start of the week drastically has been affecting rail traffic in the state. Other trains running late included the Yesvantpur-Kannur Express, Thiruvananthapuram-Nizamuddin Weekly Superfast Express, Coimbatore-Mangalapuram Intercity Express, and Thrissur-Kannur Passenger.
Strong winds broke the window panes of the Kannur Railway station building.
