Even before Kerala could recover from the impact of the 'honour killing' of 23-year-old Kevin P Joseph in Kottayam, another story about the police inaction in the case has left people in the state shocked. Onmanorama tracks down the police 'action and inaction' right from the moment Kevin was kidnapped on Sunday to the spot where his body was found in Kollam district.
• May 27, 2018 (Sunday) 2am: A 13-member gang abducts Kevin and cousin Aneesh from their house in Mannanam, near Kottayam. The gang takes them in two separate vehicles and brutally assaults them.
• 3 am: Neighbours inform Gandhi Nagar cops but they ignore the desperate calls.
• 6 am: Kevin's father Joseph lodges a complaint at Gandhi Nagar police station but they reject it.
• 8 am: The gang frees Aneesh at Sankranthi, 2km away from Gandhi Nagar police station.
• 10 am: Neenu lodges a complaint at Gandhi Nagar police station, starts sit-in in front of the station. Cops register a case but tells her investigation can start only after chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's programme in the district.
• 3 pm: Chief minister's programme begins at Kottayam medical college. Gandhi Nagar police station sub-inspector M S Shibu and other cops are on duty at the spot.
• 5 pm: Police take Neenu to the magistrate for recording her statement. Investigation starts at 6pm, 15 hours after the abduction. Gandhi Nagar SI leaves for Thenmala in Kollam district.
• 10 pm: Car, suspected to have been used by the gang to abduct Kevin, is seized from Thenmala and one of the suspects, Ishan Iyil, is arrested. He tells the cops that Kevin escaped from the vehicle somewhere near Thenmala. Search starts in Thenmala.
• May 29, Monday, 8.30am: Kevin's body found in Chaliyakkara river, 20km away from Thenmala.
• 100 km, 8 stations: Thenmala is around 100km away from Mannanam and there are 8 police stations in between. Had the Gandhi Nagar police acted swiftly and passed on the information to other stations, the gang could have been traced before they butchered Kevin.
