Thiruvananthapuram: An auto rickshaw driver who dropped a Latvian woman at Kovalam has identified her body. He, however, said that the woman was not wearing the jacket that was found near the decomposed body in a mangrove forest last week.
Liga Skromane, aged 33, went missing from Thiruvananthapuram on March 14. The body was found at a mangrove forest at Chenthilakkari near Vazhamuttom on April 20.
The driver’s testimony backs that of Liga’s sister Ilze, who came to Kerala in search of her missing sister. Ilze had identified the body as that of Liga’s but said that she did not know who the jacket belonged to.
She also challenged the police claim that her sister’s death had nothing suspicious about it. She said that Liga could not have reached the mangrove forest all by herself.
The statement from Shaji, the auto rickshaw driver, comes in the wake of the expansion of the police team under inspector general Manoj Abraham. The police were forced to set up the 25-member team after Liga’s relatives alleged foul play in the death.
The team will try to answer how Liga reached the mangrove and if she was accompanied by anyone. Though the body has been identified by relatives, DNA samples have been sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Biotechnology for a detailed analysis.
