P V Anwar Ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) legislator P.V. Anwar, who owns the park, had claimed that the area is not classified as ecologically sensitive: File photo

Kozhikode: The claims made by CPM MLA P V Anwar that his PVR water theme park in Kakkadampoyil panchayat here is not in an in ecologically sensitive area, has fallen flat after documents emerged showing otherwise.

Kakkadampoyil, in Thamarassery taluk, has been listed by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) as vulnerable to disasters.

The Authority has banned even rainwater harvesting pits in this area since it is susceptible to landslides.

Ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) legislator P.V. Anwar, who owns the park, had claimed that the area is not classified as ecologically sensitive.

The violations in the area are being carried out on the excuse that it has not found mention in the Kasturirangan report which cites ecologically vulnerable areas in the Western Ghats.

However, the government had decided that the area, which is ecologically important, is vulnerable.

The disaster management department, in a directive issued in 2016, had marked it as vulnerable to landslides.

Thamarassery taluk, which includes Koodaranji panchayat where the MLA's park is located, lies in this area.

The Authority's directives also specify action to be taken by the local bodies in such areas.

Construction has to be restricted and it has been specified that even rain pits are to be avoided in places where there is a 20 degree-plus slope.
