Will go ahead with GAIL pipeline project: Malappuram collector

Malappuram: After discussions with the people's representatives and leaders of political parties, Malappuram collector Amit Meena on Monday said the controversial GAIL pipeline laying work will continue uninterrupted.

The collector has agreed to address all the issues being raised by the people. Meena said the administration will release a notice that would include details of the land acquisition for the project.

Meanwhile, MLAs P. Ubaidulla, P.K. Basheer, M. Ummar and K.K. Abida Hussain Thangal said they had asked the authorities not to continue with the work until the public's concerns were addressed.

Local people in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts have been protesting for the past few days over the laying of the pipeline through thickly populated areas.

The pipeline laying work is continuing with police protection.

Chief minister Pinarayi had been making a strong pitch for the time-bound implementation of the much-delayed GAIL project in Kerala, saying it was "essential" to ensure "pollution-free" and "sustainable development" in the state.
