Ranni: A woman had to deliver her baby at home as her husband was out desperately looking for an ambulance for hours. Soaked in blood, the mother and baby finally received help from Janamaithri police in the middle of the night.

It was nothing short of an ordeal for Vaishakh and wife Sunaja. They belong to the Dalit community and live near the forest border at Arayajilimannu.

Sunaja started having labour pains by Wednesday evening. Since it was raining heavily, they didn't get a car to take her to the hospital. They couldn't use an autorickshaw too because she was in severe pain. Vaishakh tried calling Ranni taluk hospital for its ambulance but couldn't speak to hospital authorities because the line was disconnected immediately after the phone was picked up.

Meanwhile, the pain became unbearable and Sunaja went into labour in the presence of neighours and gave birth to a baby girl. Neighbours stayed back to ensure the safety of the mother and the newborn.

By 11pm, Vaishakh reached the Erumeli government hospital on a bike. Though there was an ambulance available at the hospital, he didn't get any help from there. Vaishakh then decided to contact the Ranni taluk hospital again.

This time, the phone was answered and Vaishakh got a positive reply. He waited at Mukkoottuthura junction till 12.30 am for the ambulance. But the ambulance never came. He called the hospital again and was told that they would be sending the vehicle soon. His attempts to get some alternative transport also went in vain.

When a distraught Vaishakh was returning home, he saw a police vehicle and told the personnel about his ordeal. Vechuchira police station ASI Noushad and civil police officer Shinto were in the vehicle. By 1.15am they reached Vaishakh's home and took the mother and baby to the taluk hospital in an hour's time. Noushad also handed over some money to Vaishakh for immediate expenses.

Vaishakh, who works as a plumber, is planning to seek compensation for the rights he was denied and the ordeal he had to undergo.
