The Centre has set up a system to dispose of waste in association with the Indian Medical Association and the Kalamassery Municipality.Kochi: The number of cancer patients who sought treatment at the Cochin Cancer Research Centre at Kalamassery since its inception a year ago has touched 3,900.
The centre, which was set up on November 1, 2017, will be marking its first anniversary.
The patients who came mostly from Ernakulam and nearby districts received treatment in disciplines like surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, and onco pathology.
The Centre has so far organized 10 medical camps, said district collector Mohammed Safirulla, who is also the special officer of the Cochin Cancer Research Centre.
He said that the Centre will utilize the facilities at Kalamassery Medical College until an operation theater will be set up at the Centre. Developmental works worth Rs 395 crore are being carried out.
Activities & achievements
The Centre has set up a system to dispose of waste in association with the Indian Medical Association and the Kalamassery Municipality. It also organized anti-tobacco programs at six higher secondary schools, besides holding awareness programs and camps at primary health centers in Kalamassery.
It also became a member of the National Cancer Registry Programme under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
In order to improve transport facilities for patients and their relatives, KSRTC provides 10 services to the Metro station nearby. It is also a member of the government's Karunya scheme that provides financial aid for poor people suffering from serious ailments.
The Centre also introduced the e-health and digital file processing to streamline its functioning.
Financial support
Rs 1.5 crore has been provided from C.P. Narayanan's MP developmental fund for the purpose of setting up digital mammogram and microtome units.
The Centre will be getting Rs 27 lakh from V.K. Ibrahim Kunju's MLA fund, apart from Rs 88 lakh from the corporate social responsibility funds of Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL).
New developments
• Work to begin on a new hospital block with 387 beds in February
• Rs 395 crore allotted for the new block and other related facilities
• A speech and swallow rehabilitation clinic will open from January
• Rs 88 lakh worth US-made scanning machine will be available from January
• Works will start on installing an immuno analyzer at a cost of Rs 40 lakh in February
• Works on setting up an operation theatre at a cost of Rs 78 lakh will begin in March
• Mammogram and microtome units set up at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore will become functional from March
• The Centre will conduct cancer awareness-treatment camps every month
