Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran CPM leader and chairman of the Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission, V. S. Achuthanandan, was stopped by the police as he arrived at Vizhinjam to offer solidarity with the agitating people there.

The former chief minister had to return without meeting the protesters at the construction site of the proposed Vizhinjam international seaport.

He said he chose to return in view of the volatile situation there.

Works on the upcoming port has been stalled since Tuesday following protests by local fisherfolk who demanded steps to protect their houses and speedy implementation of the rehabilitation package.

Hundreds of people including women and children, blocked the road in the project site by placing old boats.
