Kochi: The Kerala High Court pulled up the police for booking an online taxi driver under a non-bailable offense after a scuffle with three women passengers in Kochi.
The driver, Shafeeque, had alleged that the three women had beaten him up near Vyttila Junction on September 20. The women were apparently annoyed with the presence of another passenger in the cab even though they had booked to car-pool. The women alleged that the driver misbehaved with them.
The police booked Shafeeque, attached to Uber ride-hailing service, for “insulting the modesty of women” but the court said the charge could not be sustained. The court told the cabbie to seek bail from the magistrate. The magistrate has been ordered to take a decision urgently.
The court was particularly harsh on the Maradu sub inspector for acting on the complaint of the women despite a lack of evidence to support the claim.
The police had initially arrested the women and released them on bail. One of the woman was shifted to a hospital after she complained of uneasiness.
