Chalakudy murder: police probe role of lawyer CP Udayabhanu Rajeevan (inset) a native of Angamaly, was found smothered to death inside an abandoned building in Chalakudy.

Thrissur: Prominent advocate C.P. Udayabhanu is facing police investigation in a murder case near Chalakudy. The victim, Veeramparambil Rajeevan, 43, had complained to the police that he received a death threat from Udayabhanu.

Rajeevan, a real estate broker, was found murdered in an abandoned building at Pariyaram. The police arrested three suspects on Friday and said the trio strangled Rajeevan after an altercation related to a property deal. The trio wanted the broker to return the money they had given as an advance payment, the police said.

Udayabhanu came under the scanner because Rajeevan had written to the director general of police that he faced a threat to his life from the advocate.

What happened?

Rajeevan had leased land to cultivate at Thavalappara near Pariyaram. His scooter, umbrella and footwear belonging to three people had been recovered near the way to his farm. There were signs of a scuffle. A mobile phone suspected to be that of an attacker was also recovered during a check by the superintendent of police. Fingerprint experts are also on the job.

The police probe mainly focuses on the victim’s real estate partners.

The police were alerted to the crime by a neighbor who noticed movement in the abandoned house. He encountered a drunkard when he checked the house. The stranger shoved him away from the building. Later the police found Rajeevan’s body in a mat.

Rajeevan’s son had earlier lodged a complaint with the police that his father had gone missing. Superintendent of police Yatheesh Chandra, deputy superintendent of police C.S. Shahul Hameed, circle inspector Shaju and others are leading the investigation.
