Thiruvananthapuram: Eight diamonds of Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple that were reported to be missing have been recovered. The Crime Branch, which probed the case of the missing diamonds, said that they had not been stolen and were only misplaced. The Crime Branch team led by IG Sreejith found the diamonds.
The precious stones were recovered from the temple premises itself, though more details were not immediately available. The value and antiquity of the precious stones worth cores of rupees have been ascertained by the experts.
The probe report has been handed over to state police chief Loknath Behera.
The amicus curiae had in its report said that eight diamonds, part of the Namam (tilakam) of the deity, were missing. However, the temple manager, in his complaint to the police, had said that as many as 22 diamonds were missing.
The sprawling temple has hogged media attention after its underground cellars revealed gold ornaments, vessels, jewels and precious stones worth hundreds of crores of rupees.
The sprawling temple, an architectural splendor in granite, was rebuilt in its present form in the 18th century by the Travancore Royal House which had ruled southern Kerala and some adjoining parts of Tamil Nadu before the integration of the princely state with the Indian Union in 1947.
