Kottayam: Nurses in government hospitals in the district will no more appear in their traditional white uniforms from September 1, though they will retain the white overcoat over lightly colored saree or churidar and shirt or trouser.
Nurses, head nurses and male nurses will have distinct colors for their uniforms which would make them easily identifiable.
Staff nurse: Sky blue saree/ churidar and white overcoat
Head nurse: Lavender saree/ churidar and white overcoat
Male nurse: Black trousers and sky blue shirt.
Staff nurses in the district number 1,100. The count of head nurses is 200.
The change from the centuries-old white uniform comes as per instructions from the directors of health services and medical education. The health services decided on the changes after organizations of nurses sought them.
Identifying easy
The organizations pointed out that it had become difficult to differentiate nurses in a hospital as all categories of hospital staff wear the same uniform.
It should be easy for the public to identify nurses so that they can be approached for medical care.
Many members of the pro-Congress Kerala Government Nurses Union have already started using the new colors. Leaders of the CPM-aligned Kerala Government Nurses Association said their members will use the new uniforms from September 1.
