Kochi: The Kalamassery police on Thursday recorded the statement of actor Aju Varghese in a case relating to revealing the identity of the actress who was waylaid and molested in Kochi in February. Aju was summoned to the police station at 11.30 am and the statement recording lasted till 2 pm.
Aju admitted revealing the name of the actress through social media, sources said. He also handed over the phone used for it to the police. Aju deposed before the police that he did not know that the victim's name should not have been revealed. Aju said he had apologized in public soon after he realized his mistake.
However, the apology does not stand legally. The police may proceed with actions including arrest after the result of the forensic test of the phone comes out.
The police would wait for the result to establish the evidence despite the actor confessing to committing the offense. The case has been registered on the basis of IPC 228 (A) which prevents revealing identity of the victim in certain cases.
Aju mentioned the name of the actress in a Facebook post while defending Malayalam actor Dileep whose name had cropped up in connection with the case. The police on Monday arrested Dileep on charges of conspiracy to plot the attack on the actress. The complaint was filed by a Kalamassery native. The police have booked script writer S.N. Swamy also for revealing the identity of the actress during a TV panel discussion.
