Fisherman killed in stray dog attack in Kerala capital Representational image

Thiruvananthapuram:  A 52-year-old fisherman, who was attacked by a pack of stray dogs at Pulluvila, succumbed to injuries at the Medical College Hospital (MCH) early on Monday morning.

The brutal canine attack has once again scarred the Pulluvila coastal village, where an elderly woman was mauled to death by a pack of strays in August 2016. The angry residents and relatives have blocked the road. The Congress has called for a hartal in the region.

The killer bite

The fisherman was brutally attacked by a pack of strays at the Pulluvila suburban beach around 11 pm on Sunday. Though he tried to escape the dogs by jumping into the sea, he sustained critical injuries.

“Just after having dinner, Jocelyn was walking towards the beach to go fishing, when the dogs attacked him,” Keston, president of the local village council said.

Though he was rushed to the MCH, he died Monday morning.

The woman's death in 2016 had triggered a huge row over the stray dog menace in Kerala and the government had promised to tackle the issue. However, a year on, the fisherman's brutal death is proof that little has been done to end the menace.
