Representational imageThiruvananthapuram: In tune with the Center's decision, the CPM-led LDF government in Kerala Wednesday decided to do away with red beacon lights from the official vehicles of chief minister, ministers and others in the state.
A decision in this regard was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan here, an official release said.
It was also resolved to display registration number plates of the vehicles used by state ministers instead of the existing practice of giving numbers such as 1,2,3 etc. However, the emergency vehicles such as ambulance and fire force and police are allowed to use beacon lights, the release said.

State governor P. Sathasivam and leader of the Opposition in the assembly Ramesh Chennithala have already removed the red beacons from their official cars in April 20.
Their action came a day after the union cabinet took the decision to do away with the VIP culture by removing beacon lights from all vehicles, including that of prime minister, from May 1.
