Malappuram: Even as BJP leaders in Kerala struggle to work around their party's hardline stand against beef eaters in view of the parliamentary byelection in Malappuram, party's state general secretary K. Surendran chose to score brownie points by proclaiming that cows will not be allowed to be killed anywhere in the state.
BJP top brass was put on the defensive when their candidate in Malappuram promised a steady supply of quality beef in the constituency if he were elected. N. Sreeprakash sought to dissociate himself from the contentious issue in a bid to win votes.
The BJP had to go for damage control after ally Shiv Sena challenged the party to make its stand clear on beef ban in Malappuram. BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan tried to play down the remarks, saying it was a non-issue.
Surendran went a step ahead and backed a beef ban, while speaking in 'Kodippada' a talk show hosted by Manorama News in Malappuram.
