Mukkam, Kozhikode: The laterite stone house is a wish granted. Kanchanamala had waited for more than three decades for this memorial to her beloved who drowned while saving passengers of a sunken boat in 1982.
The completion of the project owes in part to the release of a movie based on the tragic love story of Kanchanamala and B P Moideen and subsequent media coverage about the couple’s lives. The woman found herself in the limelight after R S Vimal’s ‘Ennu Ninte Moideen’ was released to much acclaim.
Efforts to construct an office for the B P Moideen Seva Mandir got a boost when actor Dileep visited Kanchanamala and offered financial help to complete the project. Dileep laid the foundation stone of the building. The first phase of construction cost Rs 30 lakh.
The building is expected to be complete by Onam. The first floor of the building will house an old-age home and library. The building will also have an auditorium, skill development centers for women and offices of various voluntary organizations.
Moideen, who died amid a rescue operation in the Iruvanjipuzha near Kodiyathoor on July 15, 1982, was an active presence in the cultural and social life of Kozhikode. He was posthumously awarded the President’s medal for bravery.
Work on the memorial to Moideen was started in 1985 with help from his mother Fathima and P T Bhaskara Panicker. The B P Moideen Memorial Library has over 18,000 books. The Seva Mandir and the library now operate out of the Malika Complex.
