Deepu and Lekha decided to tear down their ancestral home at Irumbanam in Ernakulam, Kerala, as time took o toll on the old structure. The small family wanted a cosy house that suited their simple lifestyle. The rectangular plot with a well had indeed posed a challenge while designing the house.

Moreover, the family didn’t wish to remove or dewater the well for building their new house. The latest trend is to construct box-style houses on smaller plots. However, here, the fusion of sloped and flat roofs makes the elevation stand out.

Designed in 2500 sqft, this fabulous abode has a sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, courtyard, kitchen with a work area and four bedrooms. The interiors are designed in a semi-open style to make the spaces look and feel spacious. Meanwhile, the family living area, dining space and kitchen are arranged as part of the open hall.

The family believed in sharing a warm and intimate bond with each other. So, spaces have been designed as common areas where the family could gather and enjoy conversations. Moreover, the interiors aren’t packed with furniture pieces or furnishing items. The formal living area is minimally furnished with just a chair and a couch set. The courtyard brings in natural sunshine, making the spaces look brighter and vaster too.

The walls mostly don lighter shades that are pleasant to the eyes. Tiles with Moroccan finish have been used for flooring here. The family living area has been arranged as a cosy space close to the stair area. The first few steps of the staircase could be used as a sitting space too. Moreover, the stair area acts as a connecting space between the two floors.

The kitchen has everything within the hand’s reach. Besides, lots of overhead and bottom cabinets are built here for storage. These cabinets are done in marine ply with a laminate finish. As the kitchen opens to the dining area, you won’t feel isolated while cooking here.

Two similar bedrooms have been built on both floors. The windows bring in natural sunshine, granting a relaxing ambience. Moreover, these bath-attached bedrooms have in-built wardrobes too.

Architect Rashmi designed this elegant house catering to the likes and preferences of the family members. Even though there were a few challenges during the initial stages of construction, the family is happy that they got a brand-new house just as they had dreamt.
