I distinctly remember her, dressed in an elegant sari, with short grey hair. Her smile is so spontaneous and affectionate, it is unlikely that one would imagine her to be the woman who beat all odds to make a name in the area of Neonatology, otherwise known as new-born care. As we were sitting around the dining table post dinner, she began discussing a medical case with a former student. A few minutes later, she said, “You must draw a diagram while explaining the baby's health conditions to the parents,” The comment was truly a sign of a successful doctor, a revered teacher and a respected researcher.
Dr. Elizabeth John has been an inspiration to doctors across the globe, especially in India. Fondly referred to as EJ, Dr. John is said to be a doctor who was 'far ahead of her times.' She was even conferred with the title 'Consultant Emeritus' by the Hospital and Health services of New South Wales, Australia.
Her book – 'Memoirs of a Neonatologist' sketches those life-changing incidents that led to her many achievement in the field of medical science.
Hailing from Mallappally, situated in Pathanamthitta district, she went on to pursue her medical education at the Madras Medical College in the year 1954. Upon the completion of her MBBS, she began working at a number of hospitals and had completed her MD in Paediatrics very soon. Discontent with the work that she was doing (although she enjoyed the job), she decided to head to Australia and the rest was history. From a respected Paediatrician, Dr. Elizabath John had soon become one of the most popular and renowned administrators, trainers as well neonatologists, whose efforts were recognised by the Australian Government.
The stories of her life have been presented in the form of short anecdotes and are bound to keep the readers engaged. The rather simple yet conversational style adds to the charm of the book. Throughout the book, Dr. John clearly illustrates the key aspect of a doctor's success – commitment and hard work. It also highlights how the existing levels of racial discrimination hampered progress and career growth of able doctors.
Most of all, the book is an inspiration to all those who wish to be part of the medical fraternity.
