Kochi: Kochi Metro's first phase between Aluva and Palarivattom will be inaugurated on Saturday but the general public will have to wait for till Monday for that much-awaited ride over the city. Metro will not run services on Saturday after prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurates it with a ride in the morning.

The metro will start services on Sunday morning with a kind gesture. The Kochi Metro Rail Limited has offered a free ride to the people from the marginalized sections. The public can access metro on Monday (June 19) after buying tickets.

The service will be along the 11 stations between Aluva and Palarivattom. Passengers can either buy a ticket from the counter or buy the ‘Kochi One’ card to be issued on the inaugural day.

The first ride is reserved for the inhabitants of the orphanages and old-age homes in the city as well as students in the special schools. Government-recognized institutions which operate within the Kochi corporation, Aluva municipality, Kalamassery municipality and Choornikkara panchayat will be eligible for the free ride.
Kochi Metro has selected public sector United India Insurance Company as its insurance partner. The company has written an insurance policy of Rs 2,572 crore for the 13-kilometer reach between Aluva and Palarivattom. The Muttom yard and the tracks are also included in the policy.
