Curtains came down on the 22nd edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) on Friday with Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir’s Wajib taking home the Suvarana Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) Award for the best film.
As wait for another season of the cultural pilgrimage begins, Onmanorama brings to you reviews of some of the award winning films screened at this year's IFFK.
Wajib: a gritty tale of life in Nazareth
This dark comedy explores the father-son relationship in a Palestinian family living in Israel.
Wajib also puts forward a discussion on what it means to be a Palestinian at home and a Palestinian living abroad. This film won the Suvarana Chakoram for the best film.
Candelaria: of an old couple's tryst with porn
An unusual love story, Candelaria looks at the Cuba of early 1990s through the life of a poor old couple. Directed by Johnny Hendrix, this film won the international competition jury's special mention.
Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum review: magically realistic
Set in a Kasaragod village, after a few sequences along the backwaters of Alappuzha, Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is, to say the least, a textbook in realism in contemporary Malayalam cinema. It won the NETPAC Award for best Malayalam film.
