Love

» Language: English

» Director Gasper Noe

» Cast: Karl Glusman, Aomi Muyock and Klara Kristin

France-based Argentine filmmaker Gasper Noe's latest film is titled Love, though one could be baffled after watching it, thinking why didn't he name it just Sex.

Well, that could be a highly superficial assessment and we need to go a bit deeper. The film, non-linear in narration and shot in 3D, seems to be an attempt to study the unexplained phenomenon called love, in terms of ‘making love’. How much he has won in finding or presenting something new is an entirely different question altogether.

The one-line could be as simple as a man remembering his days with a woman throughout a day, after he gets a call from her mother asking whether he has heard from her anytime recently. The man, Murphy, then gets trapped in an incessant flow of memories. The two years he spent with Electra before they broke up after another woman, Omi, became pregnant from him, rolls out in his mind as detailed as in porn. And as his memories unfold, sex happens on screen in all its nature; affectionately and roughly.

No wonder the movie was dubbed as a '3D sex film' by a large section of global media. To be frank, at times the long sex sequences would put one's patience level on a tough test. The film tries to raise the age-old questions about the nature of love, institution of marriage and the idea of possession and, as usual, gives no specific answer. Thus the film ends up as a very normal one.

The lead male actor Karl Glusman, female leads, Aomi Muyock and Klara Kristin - all novices - have done a 'daring' act.

Belgian cinematographer Benoît Debie's work in 'Love' offers wonderful lessons for all those who are into the business of capturing visuals.
