World Cup Diary: Welcome to the greatest show on earth! British pop singer Robbie Williams and Russian singer Aida Garifullina perform during the World Cup opening ceremony at Grand Sports Arena, Luzhniki

Watching the gala opening ceremony of the 21st FIFA World Cup football tournament from the media tribune on the sixth floor of the Grand Sports Arena at Luzhniki, we felt like we were standing on top of the world. What an incredible ceremony to witness live!

There is an interesting conversation between two leading characters in the 2013 Hollywood science fiction thriller movie Gravity, which was set in space. Veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski asks the film’s main protagonist Dr. Ryan Stone, What do you like about being up here?". The silence, was Dr. Stone’s answer. While being at the Luzhniki stadium, I felt just the opposite. It was amazing to hear the sounds and rhythms of differing languages, celebrating the spirit of football, highlighting world unity and the diverse cultures of fans from 32 participating nations as well as soccer lovers from across the globe.

The entire stadium erupted when Brazil great Ronaldo — a World Cup icon and scorer of both Brazil's goals in the 2002 World Cup final win over Germany — took centre-stage alongside a young Russian footballer and the tournament's mascot. Clad in a black suit and that peculiar smile on his face, Ronaldo dummied the opening kick, allowing the kid to pass the ball to mascot Zabivaka.

An emblem, giant flags and a “players’ carpet” were placed on the pitch resembling a Persian carpet. The stage is now set for British pop star Robbie Williams and Russian opera singer Aida Garifullina to enthrall the crowd. They were accompanied by about 500 Russian dancers as the venue erupted in a sea of fantastic colour and noise. Colourful, wonderful, dramatic... it was something to behold!

Next, it was Russian president Vladimir Putin’s turn to address the crowd and the worldwide television audience. "Whatever traditions we hold, football brings us together in one single team and we are united by our affection for this spectacular and vibrant game," he said.

The show lasted just 15 minutes before the focus switched to the opening match between the hosts and Saudi Arabia. Welcome to the greatest show on earth!
