Songs from Mohanlal's Pulimurugan on Tuesday entered the race for nominations to the 90th Academy Awards in the original song category - an award A R Rahman brought to India in 2009 through Jai Ho... in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
Two songs composed by Gopi Sundar - Kaadanayum Kaalchilambe... & Maanathe Maarikurumbe... - made it to the list of 70 songs published by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday. Only five songs from this list will make the cut for the 90th Academy Awards and it will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.
Pulimurugan is the only entry from India on this list. Gopi Sundar's compositions will vie with songs from movies like Beauty and the Beast, Sufjan Stevens love song in Call Me by Your Name, Murder on the Orient Express, Cars 3 and City of Ghosts.
According to the norms, for a song to be eligible to contest in this category, it must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
City of Stars... of La La Land had won the award for original song in the 89th Academy Awards.
