The Malayalam film S Durga, which was in the eye of a storm for its earlier controversial title, has won a special jury mention at the nineteenth edition of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

The Sanal Kumar Sasidharan film earned the honor in the India Gold category. Meanwhile, the film Village Rockstar from Assam has won the best film award.

Though S Durga has been screened across fifty international film festivals abroad, the film at MAMI was its first screening in India. The film, titled earlier as Sexy Durga, was renamed S Durga following intervention by the Censor Board.

The film that sheds light on atrocities in a male-dominated society will be released in Kerala in December, said Sasidharan who also stated that he was proud to bag the recognition.

The Assamese film Village Rockstar, directed by Rima Das, bagged the Golden Gateway Award for the best film. Meanwhile, Summer 1990 by Clara Simons won the award for the best foreign film. The Malayalam film Athisayangalude Venal, in the Indian film category, received a loud round of applause at the film fest that began on October 12 and drew to a close on Wednesday.

The Silvery Gateway award went to Rahul Jain’s Machines and Dipesh Jain’s In The Shadows, starring Manoj Bajpayee, won the Grand Jury Prize.
