Android Neyyappam

The idea of Google beginning a poll to name its latest version of Android Operating System started off as an innocent question from an Indian college kid. On the second day of Google CEO Sundar Pichai's first visit to his home country after taking control of the Internet giant, a student of Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi, asked Pichai whether the popular mobile operating system Android can be named after an Indian dessert!

A smiling Pichai replied he will ask his mother for suggestions and Google can even go for an online poll to decide the name.

The crowd suggested the name of 'neyyappam' along with 'peda' and 'nankhatai'. Though we are not sure if Pichai sought suggestions from his mother, Google has opened an online poll asking users to name the next version of Android — the only demand they kept was it should start with N. If you have not voted already, here's where you have to go.

Neyyappam lovers, like us, have also started a website to support the cause #AndroidNeyyappam.

Even Kerala Tourism has started a twitter campaign for #AndroidNeyyappam.

#AndroidNeyyappam was also trending on Twitter with Malayali netizens tweeting in bulk about it.

In Kerala homes, every neyyappam is also born from a similar innocent question – enda amme chaayakku? (what snacks for evening tea, amma?).

If you are not the sentimental-type, then you should try this famous Malayalam dictum: “Neyyappam thinnal rendundu karyam, Appavum thinnam, meniyum minukkam” which means 'there are two benefits to eating 'neyyappam', you can eat the appam and wipe its ghee on your body (which will act as a natural skin care supplement). To know more about neyyappam you can also check with Ayyapan and his mother!

Still undecided? Then you should just ask your stomach. It will sure tell you that 'neyyappam' with a crispy golden brown surface and a spongy inside is the best option to name a mobile OS. Don't know the recipe? Go here and start cooking some real neyyappams.
