Mahindra, one of the leading sellers of sports and multi-utility vehicles in India, kicked off their journey to the world stage by assembling Willys jeeps way back in 1947. Though the latter changed its course over the years, there are many who sincerely believe that the original Jeep branded vehicles come from the Mahindra stable.
The much-anticipated Mahindra Scorpio facelift will definitely strengthen their belief, for, the new avatar of Mahindra’s flagship model has what it takes to rival the original Jeep!
Scorpio is the first vehicle which helped Mahindra shake off the Willys image and push the boundaries for the company to take its profile to another level. The vehicle, which made its debut in 2002, has beautifully blended its rugged underpinnings and solid off-road dynamics with cutting-edge technology.
Though the facelifted version of the third generation model launched in 2014 receives a host of updates, the ladder frame chassis and the body remains mostly unchanged to retain the original style of the Jeep’s classic design.
The manufacturer has not fiddled too much with Scorpio’s looks as the major change lies in the vehicle’s heart. The 2017 facelift hosts a new engine paired with an all-new six-speed gearbox apart from minor cosmetic changes along with a slew of premium features.
Funky and sporty
One of the standout updates is the Jeep Compass-like front grille. Apart from that, the SUV does come with a bunch of styling updates up front. It gets a slightly revised bumper sporting new fog lamps with cornering function. The subtly but aesthetically redesigned 17-inch alloy wheels and the exquisitely crafted plastic cladding on the rear door enhance the vehicle’s muscular looks. The transparent tail lamp in the outgoing model has made way for red units.
Fresh interiors
Moving on to the interiors, the all-new leather upholstery and the silver inserts in the revised dashboard lend the SUV an upmarket feel. Premium features such as the 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, rear-parking camera, parking censor, tire pressure monitoring system, rain-sensing wipers, and the voice assist mechanism progressively improve the vehicle’s efficiency and the aesthetic values and help it look a lot more contemporary.
Behind the gear knob, there is ample storage space for keeping things like mobile phone and wallets. Also, all the door pockets have bottle holders. The seats are designed to provide maximum comfort to the occupants and are ideal for long journeys.
Four variants
The new generation Scorpio will be available in four variants: S3, S5, S7, and S11. The re-tuned engine now churns out about 20bhp more power. The base model S3 is powered by the old 2.5-liter engine while the rest come equipped with the all-new 2.2-liter mHawk engine.
More power
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder diesel engine delivers 75bhp and 200 Nm of peak torque. The new 2.2-liter four-cylinder mHawk diesel engine featuring in the S5 and the S7 variants produces 120bhp and 280 Nm of peak torque. In the top-end trims, the 2.2-liter mill cranks out 140bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The SUV comes with five-speed manual transmission while the top-end variants have a six-speed manual unit.
Supreme driveability
The 140bhp variant is equipped with the same engine and gearbox that power XUV models. Hence, the ride is smooth and comfortable without shimmies and shakes. The vehicle has better off-roading capability as compared to its predecessors. Notably, gear shifting and handling are smooth and easy.
In a nutshell, the all-new Scorpio SUV is an ideal vehicle for those who are in search for a decent multi-purpose vehicle offering balanced on and off-road performance. There is also the four-wheel-drive option.

Prices of the Mahindra Scorpio facelift starts from Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom).
