New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has prohibited performance of the theatrical adaptation of Malayalam writer O.V. Vijayan's novel Khasakkinte Itihasam until a case regarding alleged copyrights violation is settled.
The court pronounced the order on a complaint filed by the author's son Madhu alleging copyright violation by the crew of the play, written and directed by noted theater person Deepan Sivaraman.
Madhu is bestowed with the copyright of all the works by Vijayan who died in 2005. The novel's adaptation into a play by Deepan was performed in various cities in the country. The court order comes at a time when the crew is preparing to stage the play in Mumbai from November 11 to 13.
Madhu had earlier sent a notice to Deepan citing copyright violation. Though Deepan had replied through email that he would get permission from Madhu, there was no follow-up.
The court has posted the case to November 28 for further hearing.
The novel, first published in 1969, is known as Vijayan's masterpiece and is one of the milestone works in Malayalam fiction. Deepan's play with the same title was also much appreciated.
