Chennai: Two suicides in a day shocked the IIT-Madras campus here Wednesday.
A woman research scholar and the wife of a professor committed suicides in separate incidents on the campus, reports said.
The first death reported was of 47-year-old G. Vijayalakshmi (47), wife of an assistant professor. She allegedly ended her life by hanging at her family's quarters on the campus.
In the second case, P. Maheswari, a 34-year-old research scholar allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room, police said.
Her body was found hanging in her room by other students by around 5 pm, police said, adding the motive behind her taking the extreme step was being probed.
Condoling the scholar's death, IIT-M said it will cooperate fully with officials in the case.
"IIT, Madras, reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar on the campus. The scholar's family has been informed. The institute is taking necessary action and extending full cooperation to civil authorities," it said in a statement.
"The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss," it said without divulging any further details.
