SSLC, Higher Secondary exams begin in state

Thiruvananthapuram: The highest number of students appearing for SSLC exams would be from Malappuram district while Pathanamthitta would have the least number of students appearing for the exams this time.

The school that hosts the highest number of students appearing for the exam would be Thiroorangadi PKMM High School with 2,347 students followed by Pattam St Mary's High School where 1,647 students would appear for the exams.

In contrast are Perinjankutty Govt High School and Bepur GRFTHS and VHSS would have just three students each. The exams would be conducted in Malayalam, English, Kannada and Tamizh.

Figures show that 2,33,374 students would appear for first year Higher Secondary exams while 2,34,397 students would appear for the second-year exams. Malappuram has the highest number of students taking the exams while Wayanad has the lowest.

Public Education Director M S Jaya said that local governance authorities, school management or PTA members would not be allowed to interfere in the conduct of the exams.

School premises where the exams are to be held would be out of bounds for them while exams are going on.

Those authorities who fail to implement the directive would be taken to task, she said. She also claimed that this time, the exams would be conducted without any fault thanks to experiences gained from past mistakes. She said that copying would be dealt with severely.

The DPI indicated that about 17,000 differently-abled children are appearing for the exams and that the number of such students is increasing, which might need attention.

There is a tendency to brand less efficient students as differently-abled and then get someone to write the exams for them. Next year onwards, students who have been certified as differently-abled at least from fourth standard onwards would only be considered for relaxation of norms, she said.

This time, there would be 2,500 exam centres including those in the Gulf. Valuation camps would start functioning from April 4 for 15 days. Results are to be announced on May 2.

The Joint Director for exams, Dr K Mohanakumar, said that as soon as exams are completed, key to answers and details of marks would be posted on the website as per directives from the Child Rights Commission.

Valuation of the vocational higher secondary exams, which are to start on Wednesday, would start from April 4. The second year exams, starting on Wednesday to March 29 would see 28,754 students appearing for it. The first-year exams, which begins on Thursday and ends on March 29, would have 31,400 students appearing for it.
