Paravur: Bijoy George does not want to take his eyes off the goal. The handball player appeared for the SSLC examination in a neck brace and a cast around his left hand on Wednesday, three months after a road accident claimed the lives of his uncle and three of his teammates.
George and other players in the Ernakulam district handball team were returning from Kozhikode after a state-level school championship when their vehicle met with an accident on November 23. Three boys died in the accident, including George’s classmate Amal Krishna. George’s uncle Xavier, who was accompanying the team, also died.
George was seriously injured in the head and the left hand. The doctor said he would have to undergo treatment for six months at least.
The tenth-standard student at the DD Sabha High School at Karimpadam is yet to recover from the shock but he did not want his studies to suffer. He had gone to school only for a handful of days after the accident but the school authorities were supportive when he told them he wanted to write the board examinations. His teachers and classmates visited him at his house and helped him prepare for the examinations.
The school management has prepared special arrangements for George to write the exams as he is unable to sit on a bench without support. The first exam was easier than he thought, George said with a smile.
