Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned Malayalam actor K. N. Jagannatha Varma passed away at a private hospital at Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram Tuesday. He was 77.
The actor was suffering from pneumonia.
Varma, who was also a Kathakali artist, acted in 575 films and numerous TV serials. He also served as a police officer and had retired from the force as SP.
He had also tried his hands at Chendamelam and performed for the first time at the age of 74.
Varma made his acting debut in the 1978 Malayalam film Maattoli. A Cherthala native, he is known for his roles in New Delhi, Lelam and Pathram among others.
He was the actor-to-go-to in Malayalam movies for roles of senior police officer, judge, bishop or top bureaucrat.
His son Manu Varma too is an actor, while director Viji Thampi is his son-in-law.
