Who are the real Indians? They are Keralites, says Markandey Katju and explains why Markandey Katju at an event in Thiruvananthapuram. Onmanorama/File photo

Former Supreme Court court judge Markandey Katju, who is known for voicing out his opinions, has praised the people of Kerala in his latest blog post and in abundance.

In the write-up, carrying the title 'Who are the real Indians?', Katju says that Keralites are 'hard working, modest, and intelligent'.

The former chairman of Press Council of India describes the country as a nation with tremendous diversity.

“India is broadly a country of immigrants, like North America, and that explains the tremendous diversity here – so many religions, castes, languages, ethnic and regional groups, etc. The ancestors of perhaps 95% people living in India today came from abroad (the original inhabitants are the pre-Dravidian tribals known as the Scheduled Tribes e.g. Bhils, Gonds, Santhals, Todas, etc).. So to live united and in harmony we must respect every group of people,” he writes.

Katju then goes onto state that Keralites keep up this diversity the best way.

“In my opinion, the Keralites do this the best, and therefore they are symbolic and represent the whole of India. So they are the real Indians, and all of us must try to emulate them and imbibe their spirit,” he says.

The renowned lawyer also wrote that he regards Kerala 'as the real India because it represents a microcosm of India'.

“As I said, India is broadly a country of immigrants. The essential quality of Kerala is its openness to external influence – Dravidians, Aryans, Romans, Arabs, British, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Marxists, etc,” he adds on.

Katju has also shared his experience with Keralites and that he has found a Keralite across the globe.

“Keralites are hard working, modest, and intelligent. They are broad minded, liberal, cosmopolitan and secular in their views (though no doubt there are a few exceptions). All Indians must learn from them,” Katju writes.

He ends the post writing - “Long live the Keralites!”

Katju has also shared the write-up on Facebook and you can read it here.

Since then, the post has been going viral on the social media with umpteen number of people sharing and tweeting their opinions about the comment.
