Kerala minister Sudhakaran made obscene gesture in assembly? G. Sudharakan. Onmanorama/File photo

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition members left their seats and stood in the Well of the Kerala assembly Wednesday, protesting against an obscene gesture that public works minister G. Sudhakaran allegedly made at Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala.

The UDF MLAs calmed down only when they were assured that the video of the proceedings would be checked.

The alleged incident happened when Chennithala was speaking in the House, accusing the government of making Kannur a war zone in the wake of the two recent political murders in the district.

Amid the ruckus, the ruling LDF strongly opposed the comments that Chennithala had reserved for CPM Kannur secretary P. Jayarajan.

BJP's O. Rajagopal boycotted the assembly, saying the Kerala police had took a one-sided approach in the Payyannur incident.

A CPM worker and a BJP activist were hacked to death Monday night in what is suspected to be a fallout of the long-running political rivalry between the two parties.
