Kottayam: The loot would have lasted for an eternity of tipsy evenings. The duo who made off with a truckload of beer from a wholesale warehouse, however, could not even toast their first drink. A police team intercepted the truck within half an hour.
Anil (37), the cleaner of the truck that transported beer to the warehouse of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation on the Ayarkunnam-Mattakkara Road from a brewery in Palakkad, planned the grand shoplift along with his friend Akhil Kmar (24).
The truck driver had parked the vehicle in front of the warehouse after collecting the token to unload the beer cases. Since his turn to unload the cases was a long way off, he went to Thiruvananthapuram after placing Anil in charge.
Anil and Akhil sneaked out the truck from the warehouse but a security guard found it strange and informed the police. Sub Inspector K J Thomas and team were waiting at the Ayarkunnam Junction when the deviant truck tried to pass through on its way to Thiruvananthapuram.
They confessed to stealing beer which was worth about Rs 2.5 lakh before tax. The 720 beer cases were transferred to the warehouse under police protection.
Anil is from Nattakam and Akhil from Parambuzha.
