New Delhi: The Congress central leadership has appointed senior leader M.M. Hassan as the interim president of the party's Kerala unit.
The Congress high command conveyed the decision to party state leadership on Saturday.
Hassan was appointed the interim KPCC president after V.M. Sudheeran quit the post earlier this month.
The move is aimed at allaying criticism that the party's top post has been remaining vacant for over two weeks even as campaigning is on for the Malappuram Lok Sabha bypoll.
The high command picked Hassan for the job as he is the senior-most among KPCC vice-presidents.
Hassan said his name was proposed by the state leaders unanimously. “I will work towards strengthening the party,” Hassan said, adding that he would take charge on Sunday.
Sudheeran's resignation came as a shocker for party workers and outsiders. He cited health issues as the reason for his surprise move, but reports suggested that he was unhappy with the raging factionalism in the party.
