Parents’ life is a candle that burns for you Attingal double-murder convicts Nino Mathew and Anushanthi after hearing the verdict. Photo: Onmanorama

Like everyone else, I was also disturbed by the Attingal murder case. Memories of the case were revived by the sentence of two persons. Perhaps I am tracking judgements because I am still in love with my previous profession as an advocate.

This case was different though. The prime accused was sentenced to death. The other accused was convicted for abetting the murder of her own daughter. I was particularly disturbed by another feature of the case.

The 43rd witness in the case was the father of the prime accused. The yet-to-be-seen face of that father pains me a lot.

A letter that man had written to his wayward son was a crucial evidence in the case. The murders were proved to have been planned by using a phone number in the name of the father. Both these pieces of evidence became solid only because the father substantiated them before the court.

He stood for truth and justice even though he knew his actions could force his son to the gallows. All fathers should bow before him.

Every one of us would have yielded to the love of our children at the last moment. But this father stood for justice to a child who was knocked off by his son.

He told the court that his son would not listen to him. He even wrote to his son to counsel him. What else could he do? Nino Mathew would not have committed such heinous crimes had he read the letter. A mother would not have tarnished herself like this.

Nino, Anushanthi committed crime to quench thirst for sex: court

Every child who disobeys his father and mother should remember Nino’s father. Parents are not trying to put up hurdles on your path. We believe that you will obey us through our lives. That belief leads us. We might fall for illicit affairs but an even bigger mistake is to turn your face away when an opportunity for correcting yourself presents before you.

Nino’s father may have been sleepless for months. He would have painfully weighed every option. Whether to save his son or ensure justice for that fallen child. He will have to live the pain for the rest of his life. Every child must understand the pain of that father.

Your parents’ life is a candle that burns for you. You may think you can trick them through a lie.

You have to understand that your parents share the feelings of that father who wrote to his estranged son to reform him.

You should stick to your father and mother no matter how grown up you are. You should realise that they have shed light on your path. Nino failed to see the light and proceeded to the gallows.

You may be living away from your parents, working or studying in other lands. They may not know what you are doing. But they live with a conviction that you can do no wrong. Call them up every two days at least. Let them feel you are close to them.

Nino’s father never abandoned him. He showed each of the children what is it to be a parent. His words are cast in stone: “My son did not listen to me.”
