Nahas and his family were extremely delighted to moved into their dream dwelling at Veliyankode near Nedumangad in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. A canal flowing on one side of the main road near the house was an attraction. The house stands on a 14-cent plot on the service road. Anticipating the scope for development close to the road that runs through the side of the plot, A 5-cent plot has been left behind the house. So, the structure is built on the remaining 9 cents of land.

The family plans to either sell this 5-cent plot or construct a building here to rent out, in the future. The structure is designed in a flat box-style elevation to suit the rectangular plot. Besides the main automated gate, there is a wicket gate too. Kota stones have been paved on the front yard. The automated dripping system in their garden could be operated by the family even from abroad, where they are settled.

Designed in 2400 sqft, this contemporary house has a sit-out, living and dining areas, courtyard, kitchen with a work area and two bedrooms on the ground floor. Meanwhile, there are two more bedrooms, a living space and a balcony on the upper floor. The walls inside the house mostly don lighter shades of hues that are extremely pleasant to the eyes. Besides making the interiors brighter, this colour palette makes the spaces look vaster too.

The entrance door instantly grabs attention for its intricate designer carvings. The semi-open interiors are spacious while ensuring enough privacy. A TV unit has been arranged as part of the formal living area. The multi-wood CNC partition that separates the living area and the dining hall, also acts as a designer element. Meanwhile, the custom-made furniture pieces perfectly complement the general theme of the house.

The cosy patio, enclosed with GI structure and a semi-open glass ceiling, is the highlight of the interiors. The trees and plants add a hint of amazing greenery here. Interestingly, the plants are watered naturally as rain showers come in through the half-opened ceiling. The family says that this fabulous spot of greenery fills their heart with positive vibes.

The outer wall of the courtyard is done in glass to let in the beautiful views of the sit-out and the garden and also to illuminate the interiors with natural sunshine. A quaint study area is separated beside the staircase. Moreover, a living area too has been arranged on the upper landing of the staircase. The bedrooms are furnished minimally to make maintenance easier. The bath-attached bedrooms have in-built wardrobes and dressing space too.

The kitchen is quite small as the family doesn’t live here permanently. Meanwhile, the cabinets here are done in marine ply with laminate finish. An adjacent work area completes the kitchen.

The owner is all praise for architect Arun of Graphite Homes for helping them fulfil their dream. The expatriate family says say that Arun managed to design and build the perfect home for them even when they couldn’t visit the site often during the construction.
