The common man faces many challenges when he decides to build his dream dwelling in Kerala. Lack of space and financial constraints are the most common challenges that make a person rethink his decision to build a brand-new house.
The value of plots and lands have skyrocketed in most places. Besides, the cost of labour and building materials too have gone up, compelling the common man to give up their dream of owning a house of their own. However, Nattika native Siraj has an incredible tale of building a beautiful abode by seamlessly overcoming these challenges.
“The rectangular plot that I owned was hardly 5 cents. Besides, our budget too was limited. I managed to rein in the budget by reducing the area of the house in square feet and by choosing the right building materials,” says Siraj.
The elevation features a flat box style to overcome the spatial challenges posed by a smaller plot.
The interior and exterior walls don the serene charm of the white hue. Meanwhile, blue highlighter paints have been used on the borders to give more dimension to the elevation. The interior spaces are arranged towards the back of the plot to suit its unique layout.
Designed in 1100 sqft, this fabulous abode has a sit-out, living and dining areas, two bedrooms and a kitchen with a work area. The spaces that are designed in the semi–open style have been separated using partitions to ensure privacy. A small wall is what separates the living and dining areas.
The stair and the wash areas are arranged in the spacious hall.
Among the multiple factors that helped in keeping a check on the expenses, building the structure using cement blocks played a pivotal role. These are less expensive than bricks and laterite stones. The interiors have been designed as space-efficient areas by reducing the area in square feet.
Moderately priced tiles that cost Rs 50 per square feet have been used for flooring. Instead of using expensive timber for furnishing, anjili wood has been used. Most of the furniture pieces are readymade and moderately priced. Moreover, false ceiling has been avoided and the light points are directly installed.
The structure allows the family to build an additional floor, if required, in the future. Siraj is happy and proud that he could complete his dream dwelling on a pocket-friendly budget of Rs 18 lakh. This is quite impressive as it would cost at least Rs 25 lakh for building a house of 1100 sqft at the current construction charges.
