Holy ash! A complete guide to applying the divine bhasmam

Bhasmam has a significant place in Hindu lifestyle. The holy ash represents Lord Siva. Smearing a dab of ash along with saffron on the forehead is symbolic of the union of Siva and Shakti.

Elders always counsel their wards to do so before praying in the evenings in front of a lighted lamp. There could be a little scientific explanation for the practice. Twilight is considered to be less salubrious and the ash can ward off the harmful germs around us.

There are a few things you should bear in mind before applying bhasmam. Wet the ash if you are applying it in the morning after a bath. Do not wet it if you are wearing it in the evening. Wet ash has a capacity to absorb the excess moisture in our body. Dry ash, on the other hand, can keep germs at bay.

Women, however, should not wet bhasmam before applying it on their bodies.

Applying the right amount of bhasmam on the right spots of your body can rejuvenate you physically and mentally. Do not apply the bhasmam using your index finger. You can use your middle finger, ring finger or little finger.

Anyone can wear a single dab of bhasmam. Three lines are reserved for ascetics. The three lines represent the three phases of life an ascetic has surpassed.

Usually bhasmam is applied on the forehead, neck, shoulders, elbows, chest, stomach and ankles. Applying bhasmam on the forehead increases the divine presence in you. Wear it on the head or the forehead and you are likely to feel energetic through the day.

Applying bhasmam anywhere on your body will keep you less sinful. Menstruating women and people who are mourning their dead should not apply bhasmam.
