Kochi: Tata Group Emeritus Chair Ratan Tata has invested in MUrgency, a medical emergency startup in Silicon Valley that is led by a Keralite.

Tata, who has invested in close to two dozens of startups is investing in a Keralite-led firm for the first time. The firm is led by Shafi Mather, a former financial advisor of chief minister Oommen Chandy. The investment by Tata has not been disclosed.

MUrgency is developing apps that would provide urgent help to those in a medical emergency. While a lot of time is wasted in searching for hospital numbers or fixing up facilities at hospitals during an emergency situation, MUrgency apps are claimed to message nearby hospitals or paramedics during an emergency. The app is currently being tested in Chandigarh, Mohali and Punchkula and it covers about 36 hospitals, 40 ambulances and 350 medical professionals in the area. The app can request for immediate medical help from close-by hospitals. It is claimed that help would arrive in about 9.2 minutes, on an average, after assistance is requested. Recently, Axilor Ventures, an incubator launched by S D Shibulal and Kris Gopalakrishnan- founders of Infosys- had invested in MUrgency.

Shafi Mather said that the investment and experience of Tata would be used to enhance technology and operations at the firm. It would also serve to attract outstanding talents to the firm, he said.
