Malappuram: More than three decades ago, P.K. Kunhalikutty was first elected to the assembly from Malappuram constituency by a margin of 21,964 votes. That was in 1982.
Now, after eight elections in which he lost only once, Kunhalikutty is contesting for the first time to Parliament.
Despite being a public figure, Kunjappa's divergent interests have not figured much in the public domain.
Not many know that Kunhalikutty was given his pet name Kunjappa by none other than his mother, K.P. Fathimakutty.
The 65-year-old Kunhalikutty's 950-sq.ft. Pandikadavathu house, which stands on six acres and sixty cents, is located on the Panakkad-Vengara road.
The seven-time legislator is an avid farming buff. He does not hesitate to lend a helping hand to vegetable cultivation at his residence in Malappuram.
Even at his residence at Nanthankode in Thiruvananthapuram, vegetable cultivation is carried out. Vegetables are never purchased.
The sprawling Pandikadavathu House is also home to ornamental fish culture.
A pond for fish farming is also getting ready on the premises, situated just two kilometers from Kodappanakkal Tharavadu in Panakkad, where the Muslim League supremo presides over the fortunes of a party which was in power for half of the 60 years after the Kerala assembly was formed.
Kunhalikutty is also hooked to Yoga for more than five years now.
Incidentally, he did not have a yoga master but practiced it with the help of a book he stumbled upon during his hectic schedule.
Kunjappa now proudly claims he has mastered the art that he would even be able to teach some 'asanas' for the uninitiated.
A 15-minute yoga session, after his customary walk in the mornings, is never given a go by for the B.Com. graduate from Sir Syed College, Thaliparamba. Now, if he wins the bypoll, some of these activities would have to shift to Lutyens' Delhi, where he would be the IUML flag-bearer.
