Despite all the achievements in the film field, the Kerala audience are reluctant to appreciate those who don't work in commercial films, says actor Musthafa.
Musthafa, who earned a special mention by the National Film Awards jury for his performance in Ain, said that though he doesn't differentiate between the so-called art films and commercial films, he believed the element of art in films has become a thing of the past.
"There are only films with either more or less level of art elements. However, I feel the art element has become a thing of the past in films. And those who don't do commercial films are not appreciated in Kerala," the actor told Onmanorama on the sidelines of IFFI.
On his film Ain, which won the National Award and is travelling between festivals, Musthafa said he felt it was indeed an honour to be cast to do the title role in the film.
"I feel the greatest honour I received for the film was Sidhu (Sidhartha Siva) choosing me to do that role. We've known each other for a long time, ever since we participated in a reality show for budding actors. We both know and believe in each others' talents."
Musthafa, who started his career as a performer in amateur theatre and mimics parade, said he came to know about institutions such as School of Drama very late.
"I studied only till the tenth standard. Then I went for an ITI course but later realised that was not my cup of tea. While I was in school, nobody asked me if I ever wanted to become a good actor. Had there been someone to guide us like that, things might have changed," the actor said, questioning the tradional types of schooling.
Musthafa's next project as an actor is a film by debutant director Sujith. The actor, who entered the film field through Paleri Manikyam, is also working as an assistant director under Ranjith.
