Kochi: Spain meet Niger in a crucial Group D game of the FIFA U-17 World Cup here on Tuesday. The European champions went down 1-2 to Brazil in their opener, while debutants Niger pulled off a 1-0 win over North Korea.
Spain started off in fine style against the Latin Americans and went ahead as early as the fifth minute. Soon the Spanish players felt the heat as many of them suffered cramps due to the humid conditions at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Spanish coach Santi Denia will know that fitness will play a key role against the Africans in the day's first game slated for a 5 pm kick-off.
La Roja are a quality outfit and created quite a few opportunities against Brazil. Abel Ruiz shone in patches, while his strike partner Ferran Torres had an excellent game. Spain will be desperate to pick up three points ahead of their final group game against the North Koreans.
The pressure will be less on Niger, who edged North Korea, and pocketed three vital points. Niger looked good while going forward, however, their defense seemed vulnerable and the Spanish forwards could make them pay dearly.
Hot favorites
Brazil, who showed great character in overturning an early reversal against Spain, start off as firm favorites against the North Koreans in the second game to be played at 8 pm. The Brazilians created numerous chances against Spain and could have easily added a couple of more goals but for poor finishing. However, strikers Paulinho and Lincoln both found the target in the opening game and are likely to pose plenty of problems for the Korean backline. Midfielders Alan and Marcos Antonio are quality players and the Korean defense will be severely tested.
Brazilian coach Carlos Amedu thanked the fans after the win over Spain and was quick to point out that they felt like playing at home. The Selecao will be keen on notching up another win in front of the yellow army and secure their spot in the last 16.
The Koreans will know they can ill-afford another loss and their tactics will be to pack the defense and hit on the counter attacks. It's easier said than done against a formidable side such as Brazil and it looks an uphill task for the Asians.
