The veteran has seen through seven centuries. The big banyan tree in Pillalamarri in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district has always attracted visitors and researchers. The antiquated tree has drawn more attention after it has been put on saline drip like an aging patient.
The tree that has spread over three acres is considered the second largest banyan tree in the world. Its trunk and outgrowths have been long infested by termites and other insects who eats their host inside out.
The village authorities have found a curious fix for the problem. They have hung drip bottles every two meters to inject saline water and diluted chemicals into the trunk in a bid to do away with the insects. The caretakers claimed that the treatment is working.
They are also planning to prop up the huge branches on concrete pillars.
