Pala, Kottayam: The currency crunch that followed the demonetization of high denomination notes continues to take its toll on the common man in various ways.
The latest victim to the shortage of banknotes is apparently a retired teacher who received a bundle of mutilated notes from a sub treasury here Saturday.
G. Joykutty, a native of Pala who was working as a teacher in Nagaland, received the unusable notes from Pala sub treasury from where he withdrew his pension amount. Only when he opened the bundle of Rs 10 notes after reaching home that he realized 85 of them were damaged. To his astonishment, the notes he got were taped using white paper.
When he contacted the treasury officials, they told him that they got the notes from a bank. The have promised Joykutty to exchange the mutilated notes with valid ones.
Earlier, a native of Kuravilangad had encountered a similar fate after he received mutilated notes from a bank.
