“It is my first film. Can you sing a song for me? If the makers like the song, they will let me compose for the film. If they like your voice, they will use your version in the movie. If not, the singer will be someone else. If you are okay with all these conditions, can you sing a song for me?” - singer Unni Menon was asked by a young A.R. Rahman over 25 years ago.
Unni Menon accepted the request and the rest is golden history. The song he sang, Pudhu Vellai Mazhai, became an all-time favorite melody of the entire nation. The young Rahman, who came up with the unique request then, has now established himself as a world-renowned musician.
“I knew the song was unique somehow, but did not expect it to be so fabulous,” Unni Menon told Onmanorama as he recalled his association with Rahman on the latter's 50th birthday.
Unni Menon also said he first met Rahman during the recording of an album song, composed by Ouseppachan. “The sequencing of that song was very unique, thanks to Rahman's arrangement,” Unni Menon said.
So far, Unni Menon has sung 26 songs for Rahman. “But we have not even spoken 26 sentences with each other. But I feel that I am close to him.”
