“He has power of every kind. What do you have?”
“I have the determination to win”, says Unni Mukundan in the movie Style.
There is a boy, a girl and a villain. Wait! Before you jump to any conclusion, let me remind you of the film's tagline which aptly says “First clichéd movie of 2016”.
A year ago, when a young team brought out the movie Ithihasa, people readily accepted it, and the movie went ahead to become a blockbuster. Quite different from S. Binu's debut movie Ithihasa (which belonged to a fantasy-action genre), Style has something more to offer.
Call it the impact of Hollywood or arrival of future, Malayalam movies are on an experimental mode and the year's first release, Style, offers a snazzy presentation. (Watch out for the initial credits rolling with pumping background music)
The movie opens with a narration by actor Lal who introduces us to three major characters of the movie — Edgar (Tovino), his father and a car. And in no time, the frames are shifted to our hero Tom (Unni Mukundan) and his family. A happy-go-lucky fellow, he falls in love with a girl Diya (Priyanka Kandwal). All is well with them until Edgar and his car enter their life, bringing to light, the rest of the plot.
Unni Mukundan impresses us with his natural self as carefree Tom, who is crazy about motorcycles and cars, goes behind the girl he loves and does everything to keep his family safe.
Over the passing years, we have seen Tovino in different avatars. From ABCD to You too Brutus to Ennu Ninte Moideen, Tovino had taken up challenging roles proving that he is ready for more. If Style is Tom's story making way through his perception and determination, the baddie Edgar deserves a special mention with Tovino playing the stylish baddie.
Yet another person from the leading cast, who, right from the beginning, makes the audience laugh and gains lots of applause in the theatre is Master Ilhan who plays the role of Tom's younger brother Jerry. The sibling rivalry and the cat fights are way too cute to watch. (The warmth and deep bonding could be seen only by the end)
Priyanka Kandwal too manages to grab attention as the pretty and charming girl. It seems Priyanka's language training has benefitted her role in the film, as her voice and expressions seem to gel well with her dubbing artist Raveena.
Balu Varghese, Baiju, Vijayaraghavan, Santhosh Keezhatoor, Nobi were other major players in the movie. (Watch out for Shine Tom Chako whose presence will take you back to Ithihasa)
The film has three songs composed by Jassie Gift and the romantic melody 'Chenthamachundil' has already received big thumps up from the audience. (Another track 'Mazhathulli' is a remixed version from the 1977 movie 'Saritha') The background score by Rahul Raj stood by the movie changing from romance to action to suspense.
The movie gets a special round of applause for cinematography by Sinoj P Ayyappan. Although the screenplay by Anil and Arun kept the pace of the narration, the Ithihasa touch was evident throughout the movie. Director Binu has managed to pull off this treatment in style, with comedy, romance and action.
An action thriller, Style has all the elements to be called a perfect fun movie. Although the movie brings nothing new, there is a suspense factor as well. For those who wish to watch a movie with family this new year, Style is a decent commercial entertainer.
