Veteran Malayalam actor Sheela has come out strongly against the 'Kiss of Love' protests against moral policing, naming them as atrocious acts, while questioning their necessity in Kerala.
The actor opined thus on the TV show 'Nere Chovve' in Manorama News channel.
“Now they are out on the streets kissing, what next? Would they be willing to strip naked and protest like how people in other countries do?,” asked Sheela.
“Whatever be the intention, a protest of this kind shouldn't have taken place. Is kissing the solution to their problem? I'm against this policy; are the women of Kerala stooping so low? There are places allocated for such activities—the bedroom. Should people be out on the streets doing what they should ideally be doing in their own private spaces?,” a vehement Sheela asked.
She also said that during her hey days, exhibiting the female body seldom happened in Malayalam movies.
“Even though some others have yielded to its pressure, I haven't done it. I was asked to wear a swim-suit for a major Tamil production, but I refused. I played the part of a prostitute in Kapalika, but the movie did not have any objectionable scene,” she added.
She also said that producer Hari Pothan had approached her first with the story of Rathinirvedam, but she refused to do the movie when she heard the story. The 1978 film, directed by Bharathan and written by Padmarajan, had Jayabharathi and Krishnachandran in the lead roles and went onto become a cult movie.
