They say the eighties witnessed the tackiest era of Bollywood, and television’s finest. It was during this time that DD audience took notice of a not-so-handsome guy, who acts like Dilip Kumar. And that was none other than Shah Rukh Khan.
Khan's first lead role was in a television series called Dil Dariya, which began shooting in 1988, but production delays led to the 1989 series Fauji becoming his television debut instead. In the series, which depicted a realistic look at the training of army cadets, he played the role of Abhimanyu Rai. After 'Fauji', he acted in two other serials, viz., 'Circus' and 'Idiot', of which the former was a tour de force.
Although he made quite a fan following during his television career, he believed he was not cut out for cinema, thinking he was not good looking. Later, in order to escape the trauma of his mother’s death, he moved to Delhi to try his luck in the movie industry. With no much ado, he was signed for four films straight, and the rest is history.
Now, after almost three decades after his stint in television, Doordarshan has announced that it will be re-running the episodes of SRK’s legendary TV show 'Circus' from February 19.
Aired in 1989, 'Circus' dealt with the story of a circus troupe and SRK played the character of Shekharan, the Malayali owner of the troupe. Yes, the superstar played a Malayali even before his film debut. Isn't that wonderful?
